4 Month Rundown

4months2

This is so late and we are already approaching 5 months, but I finally finished the post and didn’t want to leave it out.

PERSONALITY

Wooh! We are going to have a time with this little girl once she starts talking. She’s already full of sass! Everleigh is probably the most fickle baby I have ever known and constantly goes from happy to mad in 2.3 seconds. She loves Veggie tales and exploring faces. She smiles at just about everybody but doesn’t want to be held by anyone except mom and dad.

4months3

SLEEP

ugh. This is my least favorite topic. It’s getting increasingly harder to get her to sleep and then she is just about the lightest sleeper in the world. Until you WANT her to wake up…and then she’s dead weight. We’ve pretty much gone back to sleeping like newborns over here…maybe worse. She wakes up SO MANY TIMES at night. Ryan and I are both sleep deprived most of the time. I’m hoping that 5 months will be the magic number and she will only wake up one time per night.

EATING

We are still formula feeding and I am on domperidone and slowly but surely increasing my supply. She has stopped being fssy at the breast unless she is SUPER hungry. I usually try to feed her a bottle first and then breast feed so she isn’t stifled by hunger. We hope to get back to MOSTLY breastfeeding, at least.

APPEARANCE

We are now in the chubby baby phase! My favorite :) . Her hair looks like it’s coming in reddish blonde and he eyes are still blue. She is getting so big! She weighs 13 lbs 5 oz (at the time I wrote this post).

DEVELOPMENT

She is so ready to crawl but she isn’t there yet. When she does start crawling she will be a little tornado, I just know it! She doesn’t much like being onher back right now and turns right over when you set her down. She is teething like crazy and drools like a bulldog. Sophie is her favorite toy to stick in her mouth.

4months

So proud of my little girl…and we made it a third of the way!

How to Survive the First 3 Months

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

So…I know how unwanted parenting advice can be. I’ve had people get in my face and tell me how to do something and it’s pretty much the most annoying thing I’ve ever experienced. So I decided to give my parenting advice in the form of a blog post that you can totally ignore if you want to. All babies are different and this is pretty much just my experience with my daughter. But I figure if I can help out just one desperate mom looking for answers…it’s worth it. So here goes nothing.

1. This isn’t necessarily parenting advice, but still important. Labor hurts…most of the time. Some people say it didn’t hurt at all. I call those people liars, but who knows. They could just be super pregnant ladies and baby havers like Gisele Bundchen. I’m just gonna tell you to expect it to hurt. And…it doesn’t feel like really bad period cramps. It starts like that…but DOES NOT progress that way. With each contraction it hurts more and more and goes from feeling like intense cramps to someone twisting a knife in your gut. Okay, maybe that’s an exaggeration…or maybe not.

2. You will feel like Super Woman the first couple of weeks…this doesn’t last and there will come a day when that sleep deprivation catches up with you and it’s no longer easy to get up and feed her in the middle of the night. SLEEP on that day. Get someone to come take the baby off your hands whether that be your husband, your mom, or a friend. Just have them come over and hold them while you nap. You will feel human again.

3. I didn’t have a super fussy newborn and most people don’t Newborns are mostly quiet and they sleep a lot. Don’t get used to it. I kept saying how easy it was in the beginning but it changes around 4-5 weeks. They don’t necessarily get fussier…just needier. They’re more aware. Which means they’re more aware that you aren’t paying attention. More aware that they are hungry. More aware that the poop in their diaper is making their butt uncomfortable. They know when YOU aren’t holding them…or when you ARE holding them (Everleigh didn’t want anything to do with me around this time and only wanted Grandma to put her to sleep…thanks mom!).

4. Follow your instincts. At night Everleigh was waking up constantly and wasn’t always hungry. I kept thinking she would be more comfortable on her belly to sleep, but knew that people say it’s a no no. One night I decided to try it because I was desperate for a solid block of sleep. It worked. And she didn’t die. I say if it’s not completely outrageous and dangerous and you feel like it’s the right thing…go for it.

5. If you are nursing…buy some nursing tanks and bras. Yes, they are outrageously priced but totally worth it. So much better than trying to finagle a regular bra over your boob while attempting to keep yourself semi covered with a blanket AND hold a baby.

6. Have fun with the clothes. Everybody told me that I didn’t need a bunch of cute newborn clothes cause she would just stay in a sleeper or a onesie all the time and that I wouldn’t feel like getting her dressed. Well she wasn’t and I did. I had SO MUCH fun getting her dressed every morning and it really made our “same stuff, different day” routine a little sunnier.

7. Take them out if you feel like it, stay in if you don’t. There are people who say you should stay in with your baby first at least the first months, especially if you have a winter baby, cause they can get sick. Well, I say babies are resilient and probably have a better immune system than you or I do. Don’t be afraid that they are going to catch the Black Plague. Just don’t let people hock a lung up in their face and you’ll be okay.

8. If you can…wait until your husband or mom or whoever you have in your life comes home, to shower. I realize you can’t always do this and some people are single moms but if you can…do it. Lock the door and take that shower all. by. yourself. It will feel like a freakin day at the spa.

9. Get a convertible car seat. I am going to do a review of our convertible car seat in my baby gear post, but that can wait. We bought a stroller system with the infant car seat. Babies outgrow those things pretty fast believe it or not. Ev started getting cramped and uncomfortable in it at about 2 months. Plus, at that point babies really want to sit up and see what’s going on around them. A convertible car seat, especially the Maxi Cosi with the Tiny Fit System, grows with them and saves you money.

10. Don’t buy 10,000 hats. They don’t really need them after the first month or two.

11. It’s okay to get overwhelmed and it will happen. It’s also perfectly fine to set them in the crib/swing/bouncy/pack n play…heck, even the floor to go to the bathroom, shed a few tears, and collect yourself.

12. Que up a few good TV shows and don’t listen to people who tell you having the TV on all day around a baby is bad. When they’re this small they barely know they have hands let alone the capability to rot their brains with reruns of Gray’s.

13. Go to a movie. It’s okay. Pick a day when there won’t be lots of people in the theater and go see something you’ve been wanting to watch. They will most likely sleep through the whole thing and in the event that they don’t…just go outside for a few minutes to calm them down. Seeing some of the movie is better than none, right?

14. Don’t feel bad for letting other people hold your baby. I did…but they really DO want to. They wouldn’t have asked if they didn’t.

15. Get a play gym. Once they get to be about 2 months they will  love it and you might finally get to do some laundry…or eat.

16. Prepare to spend some money. Baby products are hit or miss. What works for one kid might not work for another. We went through 3 swings before we found the right one. And there are plenty of baby items that we label as “crap” sitting around our house cause she didn’t like it. But…that’s what craigslist is for, right?

17. Hold them, hug them, stare at them while they sleep, sleep with them! They will only be this small for so long. Let the chores go by the wayside for a little while and just enjoy your baby. I promise you won’t regret it.

18. Eat whatever you want for 6 weeks. If you’re breastfeeding you will be hungry all the time! If you aren’t…you probably still will be. Give yourself some time to recover before going on a diet.

19. Get a baby monitor with video capability.

20. This one saved my sanity. My child HATED the car. I don’t mean that she would fuss until she fell asleep. No…there was no falling asleep. She would just cry…and cry…and cry. We went on a 7 hour trip to FL and she cried the whole way there and it was awful. For the way back we got a car DVD player and hooked it to the back seat headrest so she could see it and to this day…it is the only thing that makes her happy in the car. AND WE LOVE IT!

So there you go. Take it or leave it. Honestly…you will leave most of it. But that’s okay. Cause my biggest piece of advice is to do things your way. Never feel bad for your parenting decisions. Everyone makes mistakes. EVERYONE. Once we left a restaurant with Ev still in her car seat and FORGOT TO BUCKLE HER UP. I felt like a horrible parent…but she was fine. And that’s the most important thing. As long as your baby is okay…you did okay.

Good luck, new mama! You’re in for an adventure!

3 Month Rundown

3months

How is my little girl 3 months already?

PERSONALITY

Everleigh definitely knows how to get what she wants. Her latest accomplishment is pushing out her bottom lip in complete and utter sadness. She loves to play with her toys and will probably be one of those toddlers who disappears for hours at a time to play on her own. Month 3 has been full of smiles and our favorite thing is seeing her light up when she first sees your face after being away for a while. You can constantly see her brain working away and I am always wondering what’s going on in there. I think this girl is going to be an athlete because she’s all about the physical milestones and constantly wants to be moving. She’s obsessed with her hands and you can always find them right by her mouth.

SLEEP

Ev usually goes to sleep around 8 or 9 pm in her crib. She usually wakes up around 2 am to eat and comes to sleep in our bed. Her next wake up is around 6 am. From there on out she’s a big surprise. She will wake up anywhere from 7 to 11:30 am depending on her mood. I’m a fan of the later days because it gives me some time to get things done in the morning.

EATING

We are going through a little bump in the road with breastfeeding but are slowly but surely pulling through. Ev is eating great and we go in for her weight check next week.

APPEARANCE

Those baby blues are only getting bluer! She’s getting pretty long and is now wearing 3-6 month clothes. Her hair is still the same and hasn’t yet fallen out nor grown in more. I think she’s a nice 50/50 of my husband and I. I’ll have to share some baby/kid pictures of us sometime to compare.

DEVELOPMENT

This has been the month of milestones! She’s rolling over from back to front and front to back, she’s grabbing and shaking her toys, doing bigger “push ups”, and babbling on and on. Her smiles have also become more meaningful.

I am so glad to see my girl excelling and having so much fun while doing it!

One Year Blog Dare Day 9: An Unforgettable Dream

Hmm…I have a hard time with this one because I can never remember my dreams. And when I do it’s bits and pieces and when i tell it they sound completely stupid. So maybe I’ll not go with the literal translation of this.

How about a dream for my future?

When I think about mine and my family’s future it goes something like this:

Ryan is a successful EMT/Paramedic and loving his job. We own a house and make enough money to have family fun and get the things that Everleigh needs and most of what she wants. She’s likely to be our only child and she will probably be spoiled. haha. I would love to come up with some sort of lucrative business to do from home. Something fun and creative that makes us a little but of money on the side.  We will likely still live in GA but I am open to living someplace WARM! lol I also see us being overall happy, but not without a few hiccups in the road I’m sure.

So that’s my dream for our future :)

Paleo Buffalo Chicken & Kale Chips

Last night Ryan was working at the hospital until 11 pm so I had to do something easy and quick and that could be stored in the fridge without getting gross.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

The only thing that wasn’t paleo about this is that we dipped ours in sour cream (weird, I know…but REALLY good)

So here’s the recipes:

KALE CHIPS

What you will need:

1 head of kale

Olive Oil

Season salt (I used garlic & pepper salt)

First you take the head of kale and carefully cut it away from the stalk. I used kitchen scissors. Then tear it into bite sized pieces. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with season salt. Bake at 275 until nice and crispy like chips.

*If you wash your kale, do it the day before because they MUST be dry.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

These are so YUMMY! I put our leftovers in ziplock baggies for snacks.

BUFFALO CHICKEN

What you will need:

2 Chicken breasts

Buffalo Sauce (sugar free)

1 Egg

Coconut flour

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Slice your chicken breast in half long ways

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then cut them into strips.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Crack your egg into a bowl and put your coconut flour into a second bowl. I didn’t do a double coating but I think they would have been even better if I had.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Dip each chicken strip into the egg and then roll in coconut flour. Repeat for a second coat of breading. Have a plate readytolaythem out on.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

You will want to rinse your fingers every 5 strips because your fingers will get caked with the flour and it can get too messy if you don’t.

Heat 3 tbsp of coconut oil in a large skillet of medium heat. You can also use olive oil or butter.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Use tongs to drop each strip into the pan.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Continue to flip each strip every 2 minutes until cooked through and browned.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Be careful while flipping them. The breading is fragile and will falloff if you scrape at it.

Toss in buffalo sauce, plate and you’re done. I have also made this recipe using almond flour and it tasted a little nuttier but the flour doesn’t stay on as well because ti’s chunkier.

Other ways I’ve used this recipe:

Buffalo Chicken “sandwich” topped with tomato, lettuce and paleo ranch.

Using wings for hot wings (you have to use a lot more oil this way)

Over salad.

So there you have it. Buffalo Chicken doesn’t have to be bad for you! Enjoy!

Primal Jalapeno Poppers & Stuffed Bell Peppers

Last night in celebration of us starting our 30 day challenge…we decided to go with a primal dinner.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

We’re not doing paleo because we really want to build muscle and always find ourselves losing a lot of weight when we do. Primal has more calories which is also good for me, because I’m breastfeeding. From what I’ve noticed Ev doesn’t have a super sensitivity to dairy unless I drink a giant glass of milk, but a little cheese doesn’t hurt. So here’s how I made it:

JALAPENO POPPERS:

I am doing enough for 2 servings

What you will need:

2 jalapenos

4 thick-cut pieces of bacon with no preservatives (i.e not smoked)

2 tbsp of full fat cream cheese

First cut the ends off of the peppers and cut in half. Seed them unless you really like spice.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then fill each jalapeno with 1/2 tbsp of cream cheese using a butter knife.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Wrap each one in a piece of bacon.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Cook on 350 for 20 minutes or until bacon is done. The longer you cook the peppers the spicier they will be.

For paleo eaters: Replace cream cheese with mashed avacado seasoned how you like.

STUFFED BELL PEPPERS

Again, enough for 2 servings

What you will need:

2 Bell peppers (I prefer colorful for extra nutrients

1 lb hot italian sausage

Sprinkle of shredded cheese

First cut the ends off the peppers, cut in half and seed.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Next get an appropriately sized pan and add 1/2 in of water in the bottom and place your pepper halves face-to-face in the pan.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Laying them flat like this will help the peppers cook faster.

Next brown your italian sausage. If it is in the casing squeeze it out and break it up.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Then sprinkle with cheese.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Bake at 375 for 25 minutes or until peppers are soft and cheese is melted.

And viola!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

For Paleo eaters who can’t have cheese…add tomato paste to the meat and season for extra taste. I’ve had it this way and it’s awesome!

So that was our Primal dinner last night :D

One Year Blog Dare Day 8: I Would Like To Be A Spokesperson For…

Okay, let’s get serious here. One thing I am truly passionate about it is raising healthy children. While this may not be a brand…it is an important issue that needs some awareness.

In today’s society we are told to trust our government and everything they say. This includes the politicians, FDA, Doctors, ect. We have a set diet that is recommended to us and, if your child goes to public school, shoved down our throats. We go to the doctor and are told to listen to what they have to say and follow their directions, without using our own judgement with our children and wonder why our kids have so many issues.

There is endless research that proves that the diet we eat today as Americans…is deadly. We have the highest rates of obesity, diabetes, and illness (in a 1st world country). We spend our lives eating processed foods filled with hormones, pesticides, and man made ingredients and then are devastated and confused when we end up with cancer or some other deadly disease. We have children starting puberty in elementary school from all the hormones that are packed into our meats. Long story short, we are harming ourselves and our children when we fail to take our diets seriously.

I am just as guilty as the next person of eating like crap. When I was 18 I went to Taco Bell everyday for a year straight. Not my proudest moment. I’m still thin, but does that mean it didn’t affect my health? Absolutely not! My insides were wrecked…and are still recovering from all the damage I did to them over the years. But I am in the process of fixing that…and thinking everyday about the things I will feed my daughter.

So if I could be a spokesperson for anything…I would encourage people to change their lives…and their children’s lives into something better and healthier so maybe we could all spend a little more time together.

Diet & Fitness

I am going to start a new category on my blog. I am 1 week shy of being 3 months postpartum and it’s time to kick my butt back into shape. But I want to be in even better shape than I was before.

I am officially starting a 30 day challenge tomorrow.  I am going to be eating healthy (VERY low carb…paleo with some dairy added in for the extra fat…which is basically Primal eating) and going to the gym for at least an hour 5 times a week. I am going to do all cardio for the first 15 days and then do muscle building exercises and cardio for the last 15 days. I am going to post weekly pictures of my progress and post my daily meals and recipes.

Okay…so this is what I am starting with:

I know…I look great for just having a baby. I was lucky enough to not get a single stretch mark during pregnancy (although I don’t know if luck has as much to do with it as me applying cocoa butter 3+ times a day) and I don’t look like I gained 50 lbs, even though I did. I am currently 15 lbs over my original before-pregnancy weight. I want to lose most of that first and then start building muscle. They say it takes 4 weeks to see a change in your own body and 12 for other people to see a change. I’m looking forward to it.

One Year Blog Dare Day 7: Life Without…

My Family

I remember when I was in high school and I would lay in bed at night and pray for God to send me a good guy. I kept praying and praying and nothing ever happened. All the guys I really liked and wanted to date barely noticed me and all the guys who liked me were…well let’s just say they were less than stellar. I made some bad decisions relationship wise and ended up thinking that God wasn’t answering my prayers. I was seeking…and finding no one. I was knocking and the door was not be answered. I went on a couple dates and even got in a 2 day relationship with someone…yes, TWO DAYS! I quickly realized he just wasn’t for me. I was out of town for a long time working for my mom’s business and had broken up with my boyfriend at the time. He had moved back to his family’s and the long distance was not working out. Even though it was my decision…I still didn’t understand why…and it hurt.

I decided to just give up on a relationship. I was young and didn’t need one anyway. So I finally asked God to send me a great guy when HE was ready. I worked hard and focused on spending time with my family, something that fell by the wayside for a while. After a few months I went home with my sister and it happened to be my best friend’s birthday while I was in town. I went to hang out with her and she was staying at her brother’s house. This is where I met Ryan.

The months following months were sort of a blur cause we were just friends for a while, but I was a girl with a crush haha We quickly became great friends and did everything together. Now, we just count it as when we started dating. He eventually asked me to be his girlfriend and then his wife. Less than 2 years later we would find out that we were going to have a baby girl. In December 2012…our worlds changed forever as we welcomed her into them.

Looking back, I could have never imagined dating Ryan, marrying him…having a daughter with him. But now that I am…and now that I do,I couldn’t imagine my life without my family.
